How To Choose The Best Gym For You - What Is Important When Choosing A Gym?

Every January there is a rush of people looking to join a gym to get in shape which is great. Sadly by February most of them have already stopped going.

While there is a wide range of reasons that that occurs one that is often overlooked is that they didn’t choose a gym that fits them and their needs.

In this article we give some tips on finding a gym that fits your needs and expectations.

When you want exercise to be part of your daily routine, finding a gym that makes you feel comfortable and that you enjoy going to plays a significant role in your willingness to work out and remain consistently motivated.

Choosing the right gym may make your fitness goals come true, and choosing the wrong one may completely ruin you and your health.

Here are some of the basic things that you should consider before making the final decision:

Location, Location, Location

If getting to the gym is a hassle or the distance is to great (more than 10-15 minutes) the likelihood of you going will dramatically decrease.

When looking for a gym, take into account if the gym is relatively close to your home. You can also consider if it is close to your workplace. This may be convenient for you if you plan to exercise in the morning on your way to work or in the evening after work.

Quality Of The Facility

Fitness is not a messy-free venture, and therefore it is crucial to have a clean and spacious area for working out. After all, no one wants to worry about mold, grime, or dust bunnies when trying to build endurance or speed.

Before signing up, visit the gym and take a small tour. It is best to do the tour at the typical time your plan to workout so that you can get a good feel for what to expect.

Take note of the level of cleanliness and how comfortable you are in that establishment.

Check if the gym offers any music or TV to keep you entertained during your training and if there is ample parking (in case you are driving to the gym).

Check that the gym is cleaned and maintained regularly to ensure that you will not be uncomfortable with using the gym equipment.

You can also check for things such as spray bottles and fresh towels.

Gym Hours

Between balancing family, work, and sleep, you may not have so much time to spare. Therefore, a gym that opens late and closes very early may not be ideal for you.

When choosing a gym, inquire about their operating hours and when trainers are available. Find out if there are some sections or amenities that close at a different time so that you have a clear idea of what the gym is offering.

If your schedule to workout doesn’t fall within “normal” business hours consider one of the ever growing 24 hour access facilities so that you can workout at times that are convenient for you.

This will help you schedule your workouts and be more likely to stick to them.

Training Options

Contrary to what many people will tell you there is no “perfect” way to workout.

Everyone approaches training sessions differently. Some can guide and motivate themselves throughout the session, while others need a professional to guide them.

There are also those who prefer a one-on-one session and others who prefer group training.

When choosing a gym, find out the available training options to make sure that they can meet your fitness goals.

If you want to access a fitness trainer, find a gym that knows the importance of training and offers these services to its members at an affordable price. Keep in mind though that cheaper doesn’t usually translate to better a more educated and experienced trainer is going to charge more than someone who is just starting out in the field.

You should also find out the gym’s target clientele because everybody reacts differently to those around them. Make sure you feel relaxed in the exercise environment rather than intimidated or embarrassed.

Additionally, some gyms are same-sex only while others allow all genders. Some gyms attract people of specific age groups. During your tour, find out if the gym is overcrowded and if you would be comfortable exercising around its current members.

Trainer

This cannot be stressed enough. Having a good trainer is extremely important, especially if you are just starting out or working out to achieve a particular goal.

The right instructor or trainer will put together a workout plan that fits you, your lifestyle and you goals. They’ll show you how to do each exercise and make sure that you are performing them correctly so that you get the most benefit and reduce the risk of injury. They’ll also keep you motivated and help you maximize your efforts and perhaps the biggest reason to hire a trainer… They’ll hold you accountable.

Online Training

One final thing to consider is the option to take advantage of the ever growing online training programs. There are plenty of options available from group fitness classes, to individual training to video instructor led sessions. For many this is a great option because you don't have to worry about getting to the gym. It also can be less expensive and doesn't require the long term contract that many gyms have. And for those who don't feel comfortable in the typical gym setting its a great way to exercise without feeling intimidated.

Choosing the right place to workout often is the determining factor in your success so invest the time to find the right place for you.
